I’ve been running a Shorai LFX battery in my car for about a year now. The battery is the 27A model, and my car is a daily-driven 2.5L Subaru which so far has clocked up about 20,000kms with the battery fitted.

When the battery first arrived, I was astounded at how small and light it was. The Shorai battery looks tiny next to the standard lead-acid battery that was coming out of the car, and when I put them on the scales the Shorai was a full 10kg lighter than the battery it replaced. Looking at the two side by side, it seemed impossible that the Shorai would be up to the job, but I’d been assured that it would start the car just as good as the original battery.

For installation in my car, I removed the original battery box and strapped the Shorai directly to the chassis; with some foam for cushioning (the Shorai’s packaging does include foam specifically for this purpose). The Shorai doesn’t have the standard automotive post connectors, so I removed the post clamps from my car’s cables and then bolted the cables directly to the Shorai using the supplied fittings. All up, it was probably about 15 minutes work to switch the batteries over, including working out how to mount the Shorai and connect it to the car.

As I was promised, the Shorai had no trouble turning the car over, and I would say it cranks my car at least as well as the lead-acid ever did, maybe even slightly better. It’s happily started my car in all conditions, from temperatures of nearly 30 degrees during summer, down to -2 degrees during winter. There has been just one occasion where the Shorai failed to start my car, but that was after a month-long holiday, when my alarm flattened the battery. A quick jump start and it was straight back to normal, and I would have expected the alarm to have drained any normal battery of that period of time anyway.

All in all, I’m very impressed with the Shorai. It works at least as well as a traditional lead-acid battery, but it’s far smaller and far lighter. The packaging included the bits required to connect and cushion the battery, and I’m more than happy to recommend the Shorai to anyone looking for a lightweight, compact alternative to a lead-acid battery.

I have been running a 21L6 in my ’94 Mazda MX5 roadster. It has the 1800cc motor and is a manual. We have owned the car for about 5 years and it has never let us down. I installed the 21A about 12 months ago and while the car doesn’t get daily use, we have taken it long distances including loaning it to my son-in-law for a holiday trip. The battery, while I thought it may be a bit small, has always started the car instantly, hot or cold and in any weather.

I was amazed at the size and weight difference! The ordinary battery I took out weighed 12kg, the Shorai weighs 1.3kg! The size difference is hard to comprehend, as it seems fartoo small for the job asked of it. Another feature I especially appreciate is that the

batteries don’t self-discharge and if you leave the car parked up for a few weeks, it will still start as though the battery was fresh. I have never had to use a charger or a battery tender due to leaving it for so long as one has to do with lead-acid batteries. I can’t recommend Shorai batteries enough for starting any engine!

“Racing at the top level is intensely competitive and everyone is seeking that wee bit of an edge, something that can make a difference to their lap times. On a race bike, saving weight is as good as adding horsepower and where the weight is placed can dramatically affect the way a bike handles.

Having the Shorai battery not only saves me about 3kg in weight but that saving is right where it does the most good, high up under the seat where the battery box sits. Reducing weight in this area helps with mass-centralising and assists handling.

Shorai batteries are renowned for their light weight, power and reliability and I am extremely happy with my Shorai Powersports battery!” -
